Periodontal (Gum) Disease Treatment
Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Periodontal therapy is used to remove tartar or calculus underneath gums tissue that is unreachable with regular cleanings. This can be done with mechanical removal with a laser. The presence of tartar allows bacterial plaque to attach to the root surface. The gums can not attach to the contaminated, infected root surface. Thus, bone and attachment loss ensues.
Periodontal therapy is done to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and also to help limit the areas requiring surgery.
Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy often precedes surgical therapy.
